    Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

Warming Shelters Open in Gordon County Ahead of Winter Weather; Volunteers Needed

Gordon County officials are preparing for a significant winter weather event this weekend, with forecasts calling for ice, sleet, and possible snow across the region. To ensure residents stay safe and warm, several warming shelters will be open throughout the weekend.

These shelters are available to anyone in need of a safe, heated place during the cold, icy conditions. Calhoun City Police Department will provide transportation to the shelters for those who need it.

Warming Shelter Locations:

  • Voluntary Action Center – Opens Friday at 6:00 p.m. (closing time depends on weather). Women and children only; pets not allowed. Located at 343 S Wall St.

  • Crane Eater Community Church – Opens Saturday at 5:00 p.m. (closing time depends on weather). Pets allowed if in a crate. Open to families and individuals. Located at 3168 Redbud Rd. NE

  • Providence Men’s Shelter – Opens Friday at 6:00 p.m. (closing time depends on weather). Men only; pets not allowed. Located at 437 S Wall St.

  • Fairmount Community Center – Opens Saturday as needed. For transportation, call Fairmount PD at 706-337-5503. Located at 11921 Fairmount Hwy SE

Shelters will provide heated spaces, seating, and light snacks and drinks. Visitors are expected to respect the shelter, its volunteers, and other guests. Anyone unable to follow these rules or who damages property will be asked to leave.

Volunteer and Donation Needs:
As the Voluntary Action Center opens Friday evening, they are seeking community support in the following areas:

  • Day and night volunteers (for monitoring, check-in, etc.)

  • Food and supplies (easy-to-serve snacks, drinks)

  • Activities for children (board games, coloring supplies, etc.)

  • Blankets

Those interested in helping can call 706-629-7283 or drop off donations at the VAC office any day this week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
