Weather Update: Uncertain Snow Potential Across Georgia on Sunday

The Gordon County Emergency Management Agency is urging residents to closely monitor weather updates as a system expected to move through Georgia on Sunday could bring the potential for widespread snowfall, though significant uncertainty remains regarding where the heaviest impacts may occur.

Forecast models currently disagree on snowfall placement. Some reliable models suggest higher snowfall totals along and north of the Interstate 85 corridor, while others indicate greater snowfall potential along and south of I-85 into South Georgia. Because of these differences, confidence remains low in determining which areas may see the most significant accumulation.

Confidence is higher in the timing of the system. Snow and rain are expected to begin moving into parts of North and Central Georgia early Sunday morning before sunrise, spreading across much of the state later in the morning. Precipitation should gradually move eastward through the afternoon and taper off by Sunday evening.

Travel conditions could become hazardous from early Sunday morning through late Monday morning across much of Georgia. Forecast snowfall amounts remain highly uncertain and will depend on how model trends evolve over the coming days. Officials also note that some outlier models show little to no wintry precipitation, a scenario that cannot be ruled out at this time.

Temperatures are expected to remain near or below freezing across North and Central Georgia as precipitation falls Sunday. After sunset, temperatures will drop quickly, reaching the upper teens to lower 20s by Monday morning. Limited melting is expected Sunday afternoon and evening before freezing conditions take hold, allowing any remaining moisture on roadways to refreeze overnight and persist into Monday morning.

Conditions should improve late Monday morning as temperatures rise into the upper 30s and lower 40s, with remaining moisture expected to melt and dry by Monday afternoon.

Emergency officials encourage residents to stay informed and closely follow forecast updates on Friday and Saturday, noting that uncertainty with this system is higher than usual. Updates from the National Weather Service and trusted media sources should be monitored throughout the weekend.
