On January 30, 2026, at 2:00 PM, representatives from Gordon County Public Safety, Public Works, local school systems, and partner agencies, along with officials from the City of Calhoun and the City of Fairmount, participated in a Special Weather Briefing hosted by the National Weather Service.
Gordon County is currently under a Winter Weather Advisory from January 30 at 7 p.m. until January 31 at 7 p.m. and also an Extreme Cold Warning from January 31 at 7 p.m. until February 1 at 1 p.m.
Key Points from the Briefing:
● Primary threat: Friday night into Saturday snow will be possible across north Georgia with higher amounts in the east and lesser in the west and Gordon County
● Snow potential:
○ Snow showers for Gordon County beginning as early as 8-10 p.m.
○ Official forecasts are for 1-2 inches, however the National Weather Service gave these percentages:
■ 80% chance of seeing any snow
■ 60% chance of greater than one inch
■ 35% chance of greater than two inches
● Temperatures:
○ Saturday: High 27°F / Low 20°F
○ Sunday: High 35°F / Low 13°F
○ Monday: High 47°F / Low 15°F
● Winds: Gusts up to 35 mph, which could contribute to blowing snow and visibility issues and possibly power outages and limbs down
● Outlook: Potential for accumulating snow followed by a period of extreme cold. Travel impacts could be immediate once precipitation starts due to cold temperatures that have been in place and will persist.
● Preparedness Efforts: Public Safety and Public Works crews are actively preparing to mitigate hazards and respond to impacts as conditions develop.
