Matthew Michael Murray, 54, of Calhoun, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2025. He was born in Massachusetts on September 26, 1970, to Ann Feerick Murray and the late Eugene Francis Murray. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Martin and Mary Feerick, John and Marion (Farren) Murray.
In addition to his mother, Matt leaves behind his children, Jackson Murray and Madeline Murray; brother and sister-in-law, Christopher and Maggie Murray; nieces, Madison Murray and Carter Murray. Many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends that he loved dearly also survive.
Matt attended Swampscott High School in Massachusetts and Loomis Chaffee School in Connecticut. He was a member of the Swampscott Little League state championship team. After his high school career, he was selected by the Atlanta Braves with the first pick of the 2nd round of the 1988 MLB draft. In the minor league, he played for the Durham Bulls, Greenville Braves, and Richmond Braves. He was named to the AAA All-Star team in 1995. Around that time, he got called up to the major leagues with the Atlanta Braves on August 14, 1995, as a pitcher. He got a hit in his first major league at-bat. He was also part of the 1995 Atlanta World Series team. He was traded to the Boston Red Sox in 1995 and later played in Taiwan for Brothers Elephants Team in 1999.
He was a devoted employee of Mohawk Industries for 15 years, where he was a Senior Product Director. More than anything in his life, he loved his children, Madeline and Jackson. He devoted his life to making theirs the best it could be. In his free time, he enjoyed deep sea fishing, watching BravoTV, beach time, and had a vast love for music and concerts.
Matt was a pillar of the community. He taught many children pitching lessons and coached many teams. He will be remembered for always having a smile on his face and doing anything to help someone in need.
A gathering of friends will be held Saturday, June 28, 2025, from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM at Trinity Baptist Church.
