Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Vertie Mae McCanless
March 22, 1937 — August 27, 2025

Vertie Mae McCanless, 88, of Calhoun, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2025. She was born in Franklin, Tennessee, on March 22, 1937, to the late Hardeman and Ada Hood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Buford W. McCanless; brothers, John Hood, Spencer Hood, James Hood, Kinnard Hood, George Hood; and sister, Frances Hood.

Vertie is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Josh and Lisa McCanless; sisters, Bonnie Mangrum of Franklin, Tennessee and Jessie Bergquist of Prentice, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Michael McCanless of Lubbock, Texas and Matthew McCanless of New York City; many loved nieces and nephews.

A gathering of friends will be held on Friday, August 29, 2025, from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM.

Burial will be held in the Hood Family Cemetery in Franklin, Tennessee at a later date.

The Brannon family and staff are honored to serve the family of Vertie Mae McCanless.
