Emergency crews responded to a gas leak Thursday in the area between the Forest Heights neighborhood and Engineered Floors, prompting evacuations and a temporary warning for residents to avoid the area.
According to the Calhoun Fire Department, 26 homes and the Engineered Floors facility were evacuated as a precaution while crews worked to assess the situation. The affected area included McDaniel Station and Forest Heights. Atlanta Gas Light responded to assist.
In an update around 9:15 p.m., officials said the situation had been cleared and residents were allowed to return home. No injuries were reported.
Relief at the gas pump could soon be on the way for Georgia drivers. The General Assembly has passed House Bill 1199, which would temporarily suspend the state’s motor fuel tax.
Governor Brian Kemp says he plans to sign the measure, calling it “great news for all Georgians” as families continue to face rising costs. Once signed, the suspension is expected to lower fuel prices statewide.
Details on how long the tax break will last are expected after the bill is officially signed into law.
Georgia hunters are preparing for the start of spring turkey season, with the statewide opener on private land set for Saturday, March 28. Public land season will follow on April 4, with the season running through May 15.
Wildlife officials say this year could bring improved hunting opportunities, pointing to strong turkey reproduction rates in 2024. The state averaged 1.8 poults per hen, one of the highest levels in the past decade, which could mean more mature birds available this season.
The daily bag limit remains one gobbler, with a season total of two. Hunters are reminded to obtain a free harvest record and report their harvest through Georgia Game Check within 24 hours.
Officials say license purchases and hunting equipment help fund conservation efforts across the state.
