GoFundMe Launched to Support Family of Calhoun Toddler with Rare Condition
A GoFundMe campaign has been created to assist the family of 2-year-old Sarah Lopez of Calhoun, who developed transverse myelitis, a rare and serious neurological condition, following a bout with the flu.
According to the fundraiser, Sarah and several of her siblings contracted Flu A shortly before Christmas. Sarah was later diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a condition involving inflammation of the spinal cord that can cause muscle weakness, pain, and paralysis. She has been hospitalized at Erlanger Hospital since December 20, 2025, requiring intensive treatment including a breathing tube, plasma exchange therapy, and high-dose steroids.
Sarah was successfully removed from the ventilator on December 29 and is now showing signs of progress. Her family hopes she will soon be transferred to a rehabilitation facility in Atlanta.
Due to the severity of Sarah’s condition, her mother, Kenia Lopez, has temporarily stopped working to remain at her daughter’s bedside. Funds raised through the GoFundMe will help cover medical expenses and other financial needs during Sarah’s recovery.
