Calhoun Advances to Sweet 16 After 79-74 Win

The Calhoun Yellow Jackets are headed to the second round of the GHSA State Basketball Tournament after defeating Luella High School 79-74 Tuesday night.

In a high-scoring, hard-fought matchup, the Jackets outlasted Luella to keep their postseason run alive and advance to the Sweet 16.

Calhoun will host Round 2 on Saturday, Feb. 28, at Calhoun High School. The opponent and tip-off time have not yet been announced.

With the victory, the Jackets keep their state title hopes alive and will look to capitalize on home-court advantage in the next round.


Dr. Sarah Layson Sworn In to Calhoun City Schools Board of Education

Dr. Sarah Layson was officially sworn in Monday during the City Council meeting by Mayor Jimmy Palmer to fill the Post 4 seat on the Calhoun City Schools Board of Education.

A longtime community leader and advocate for education, Dr. Layson brings experience in school governance and professional leadership. She previously served on the School Governance Teams at Calhoun Early Learning Academy and Calhoun Elementary School, most recently as CES Co-Chair.

Dr. Layson is a graduate of Leadership Calhoun-Gordon County and has served on the boards of the Voluntary Action Center and the Gordon County United Way. Professionally, she is a healthcare leader and Clinical Account Manager for Capital RX. She holds a Bachelor of Science and a Doctorate of Pharmacy from Mercer University and maintains active memberships in state and national pharmacy associations.

A Calhoun resident, Dr. Layson and her husband, Toby, have three children enrolled in Calhoun City Schools. She says she is committed to thoughtful collaboration, transparency, and a student-centered approach to decision-making.

Board Chair Becky Gilbert-George expressed confidence that Dr. Layson’s expertise and passion will be valuable assets to the district.


Weather Alert: Showers and Storms Expected Through Friday

The National Weather Service is advising residents to prepare for showers and thunderstorms moving through the area through Friday evening. In east-central Georgia, rain chances may continue into early Saturday morning.

Forecasters predict widespread rainfall totals between 0.75 and 1.25 inches, though localized areas could see higher or lower amounts depending on storm development.

Residents should monitor local forecasts and be prepared for periods of heavy rain, lightning, and possible ponding on roadways.
