  • Stephens School Campus Designated Local Historic District
    The Calhoun City Council approved the designation of the Stephens School Campus as a Local Historic District following a recommendation from the Historic Preservation Commission. The campus, located at McConnell Road and West Line Street, dates back to 1929 with the construction of the Rosenwald Elementary School and later served as Gordon County’s only Black high school during segregation. The site is also significant for its athletic legacy, including multiple state championships and the Stephens High Gymnasium—the first indoor gym built for Black students in North Georgia.

  • Bird Flu Confirmed at Walker County Poultry Operation
    State and federal agriculture officials confirmed a case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) at a commercial poultry operation in Walker County, marking Georgia’s first confirmed case of 2026. The affected facility housed approximately 71,264 broiler breeders. The Georgia Department of Agriculture has deployed its Emergency Management Team to oversee depopulation, disposal, and disinfection efforts, which are expected to continue through the week.
