Millage Rate Hearings Continue
The Gordon County Board of Commissioners held two of three public hearings this week on the county’s 2025 property tax millage rate. Only one resident spoke, thanking commissioners for keeping the proposed rate at 9.042 mills—the same as last year. The final hearing is set for Sept. 16 at 6 p.m.

Northwest Georgia Fair Opens Friday
The 2025 Northwest Georgia Fair kicks off Sept. 5 at the Cherokee Capitol Fairgrounds and runs through Sept. 13. The nine-night event will feature midway rides, food, livestock shows, pageants, and nightly entertainment. Highlights include the Fair Parade in downtown Calhoun on Sept. 6 and a Senior Adult Fun Day on Sept. 10. Admission is $5; children 5 and under are free.

Driver Charged in Fatal Crash
Matthew Allen Pickens, 44, of Calhoun, has been charged in connection with an Aug. 23 crash that killed one person and injured members of a Dade County family. Authorities say Pickens fled from law enforcement before the head-on collision. He was returned to Gordon County this week after being treated in Chattanooga and now faces multiple charges, including Homicide by Vehicle.

Goodwill Job Fair Sept. 10
Goodwill of North Georgia will host a Fall Job Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 2–4 p.m. at the Calhoun-Gordon County Public Library. Employers from multiple industries will be on hand to meet job seekers, review resumes, and conduct on-site interviews.
