The Gordon County Board of Commissioners will hold its monthly meeting tomorrow, October 6. The day begins at 11:00 AM with a work session covering departmental updates and an executive session, followed by the regular voting session at 12:00 PM. The board will hold a public hearing on the FY26 millage rate before voting on a resolution to set the 2026 millage rate for the Gordon County Government and Board of Education. Additionally, commissioners will review a proposal from TischlerBise for an impact fee study requiring a budget increase not to exceed $106,450. Other items on the agenda include public works equipment purchases, an updated IT acceptable use policy, and a $660,302 bid award for Slate Mine Bridge repairs.

Calhoun City Schools Updates
The Calhoun City Schools Board of Education recently voted to set the FY27 millage rate at 10.888 mills. This reflects a full rollback of 2.847 mills, marking the school system’s seventh consecutive year of a millage rate rollback and the eighth straight year without a rate increase. The board also took time to celebrate a wealth of academic and athletic achievements. Honors were awarded to National Merit Semifinalist Annie Eickman, a large group of AP Scholars, and the AAA State Champion Lady Jackets golf team. Judith Ralston of the Calhoun Early Learning Academy was honored as the system’s overall Teacher of the Year.

Historic Oostanaula School Restoration: After navigating administrative delays and floodplain mapping, the Historic Oostanaula School is officially launching phase one of its restoration project. Regular activities at the schoolhouse are suspended while crews install a new roof, repair the foundation, and upgrade the electrical and HVAC systems. The community club aims to complete this phase by spring 2027 for the building’s 100-year rededication.
Driver’s Education: Gordon County Schools is currently accepting online applications for upcoming Driver’s Ed programs. The November session will be held at Gordon Central High School, and the December session will take place at Sonoraville High School.
Homecoming Royalty: Congratulations to the newly crowned 2026 Homecoming royalty. Calhoun High School crowned Hudson Chadwick as King and Joanna Layson as Queen. Sonoraville High School honored Kolter Kelley as King and Lilli Lovingood as Queen.
Fall Recycling Day: Mark your calendars for a local recycling event scheduled for Saturday, October 17. The event will run from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Rock Bridge Community Church in Calhoun.
