United Way of Gordon County Executive Director Claire Norman joined us on the air today on Georgia 101.7 FM WJTH to discuss the organization’s ongoing programs and the impact they continue to make throughout the community.
In local politics, early voting begins Monday, June 8, for the June 16 primary runoff election. Voters can cast ballots from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Gordon County Board of Elections office. The ballot includes a local Board of Education race, where candidate Judy Craig has continued meeting with voters through public forums and events. Her opponent, Dakota Grogan, has not participated in recent public forums. Voters will also decide several state and federal runoff races, including the 11th Congressional District contest.
Drivers across Northwest Georgia are seeing higher prices at the pump following the expiration of Georgia’s temporary gas tax suspension. Local prices were reported at $3.89 per gallon at the MAPCO on the Highway 53 Spur and $3.69 per gallon at the BP station on Calhoun’s east side.
Meanwhile, members of the Rotary Club recently received an update on the 351 bills signed into law during the 2026 Georgia General Assembly session. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is also encouraging residents to participate in its annual summer turkey brood survey, while nutrition advocates are expressing concerns over proposed federal cuts to the WIC program that could total approximately $200 million nationwide.
The weekend calendar is packed with activities across the region. The annual Dixie Highway Yard Sale is underway and continues through Sunday, stretching roughly 90 miles along historic Highway 41. Motorists should expect increased traffic and frequent stops along the route.
The Calhoun-Gordon County Library is hosting a variety of programs today, including adult fitness and coffee gatherings this morning, followed by Dinosaur Discover Day and visits from Paw Pals therapy dogs this afternoon.
On Saturday, the Wings and Wheels Air and Car Show returns to Tom B. David Airport from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., featuring aircraft displays, classic vehicles, food vendors, and family-friendly activities.
The Voluntary Action Center is also seeking community support and is currently in urgent need of pantry donations. Most-needed items include bottled water, canned vegetables, and chips to help meet the needs of local families.
