As our community settles back into a regular schedule following the Independence Day holiday, local government and civic life remain in full swing. From important zoning decisions in Calhoun to opportunities for community service, here is the latest update for Gordon County.
City Council to Address Development Projects The Calhoun City Council will convene today, July 6, 2026, for a noon work session followed by a formal meeting at 7:00 P.M. at the Calhoun Depot. The agenda includes several public hearings regarding zoning and variance requests, notably a front setback variance request for a property on Fain Street and Jim Lay Drive, as well as an annexation and zoning request for 1.19 acres on South Wall Street.
Community Service: Help Stock the Shelves
The Volunteer Action Center (VAC) is currently running its annual “1st to Respond, 1st to Serve” food drive from July 1 through July 31. Residents are encouraged to partner with local first responders to provide essential items—including canned proteins, vegetables, soups, and bottled water—to neighbors in need. Donations can be dropped off at various locations, including local police, sheriff, and fire departments, as well as the AdventHealth Gordon EMS and E-9-1-1 Communications center.
Additionally, those looking to connect with the community are invited to the “Food and Jesus” ministry gathering at the Volunteer Action Center on Wednesday, July 8, from 4:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M..

Local residents have a variety of events to look forward to this week:
Art in the Park (July 7): Join Hummingbird House Art Studio for a morning of creativity. Sessions include an Adult Watercolor Class at 9:00 A.M. and a Children’s “Farm Fresh” Tea Towel class at 10:00 A.M..
Summer Movies (July 7): The historic GEM Theatre continues its free family movie series with a screening of Journey to the Center of the Earth.
Music and a Meal (July 11): Head to the Historic Oostanaula School Community Center at 5:00 P.M. for a dinner featuring fried chicken, meatloaf, and more, complete with live music from GLORY, Silver Woodchuck, and Becky Branch.

Farmers Market: The Downtown Calhoun Farmers Market remains open every Tuesday and Saturday from 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at City Park.
Reading Challenges: Don’t forget to participate in the “United We Read” Summer Reading Challenge for a chance to win utility bill assistance, or visit the Fairmount Library for their Summer Reading Bingo, which runs through July 24.
Back-to-School: Preparations are underway for the 10th Annual Free Back-to-School Outreach on July 25 at Black & Yellow Park.

The Atlanta Braves faced a tough challenge against the New York Mets this weekend. While the Braves secured a 14-3 victory on Saturday with a season-high five home runs, they fell 10-9 on Sunday after a massive late-inning rally fell just short. The team continues their series against the Mets tonight, July 6, at 7:15 P.M. at Truist Park.
