The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a deadly crash that occurred Saturday afternoon, August 23, on Highway 53 in Gordon County. Authorities say a high-speed pursuit ended when a black Mercedes crossed into oncoming lanes and collided head-on with a Honda CR-V. The crash claimed the life of a 49-year-old passenger and left a 35-year-old woman, her 9-year-old child, and the suspect driver with serious injuries. Both vehicles caught fire, and deputies and troopers pulled victims from the wreckage.
In other local news, the Gordon County Board of Elections has announced a permanent precinct relocation. Effective immediately, voters who previously cast ballots at the Calhoun Recreation Department will now vote at the Belmont Church Family Life Center on West Belmont Drive. The move was made to allow for the demolition and reconstruction of the recreation facility.
Meanwhile, city and county leaders are set to meet Monday, August 25, for a Joint Commission session.
