Calhoun authorities are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred late Tuesday night, October 21, 2025. According to the Calhoun Police Department, Marvin Vincent Thomason, 56, of Hillhouse Drive, was crossing Oothcalooga Street outside of a marked crosswalk near Dollar General when he was struck by a northbound 2017 Chevrolet Malibu. Thomason, who was in a wheelchair, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Neighbors and Dollar General employees reported that Thomason appeared to be under the influence of alcohol prior to the incident. Police continue to investigate.

In a separate case, Shaun Corey Farrell, 47, of Calhoun, was arrested on October 13, 2025, on charges related to trafficking over two pounds of methamphetamine. The arrest followed a two-month investigation by the Calhoun Police Department’s Special Operations Division, the FBI Safe Streets Task Force, and the Dalton Police Department, with assistance from the Georgia State Patrol and Gordon County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities seized more than one kilogram of methamphetamine from Farrell, who had been released from state prison just months earlier. He now faces multiple charges, including trafficking methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute, and driving while his license was suspended. Farrell remains in custody as the investigation continues.

On a lighter note, the Gordon County Board of Commissioners recognized local educators during their meeting on October 21 by presenting a proclamation to the Calhoun-Gordon County Retired Educators Association in honor of Retired Educators Day, which will be observed on Sunday, November 2, 2025.
