Calhoun Names New Fire Chief
The Calhoun City Council has appointed Mike Schutz as the new Chief of the Calhoun Fire Department. Schutz brings nearly 30 years of fire service experience, most recently serving as Deputy Chief with Cobb County Fire Department, overseeing operations at 29 stations. He holds a Bachelor’s in Organizational Management and Leadership and an Associate Degree in Fire Science, as well as the Georgia Fire Chief designation. Council officials praised his leadership, operational expertise, and commitment to the community.

Man Sentenced for Abusing Disabled Wife
A Gordon County jury convicted 38-year-old Alvaro Perez-y-Perez of raping and abusing his disabled wife, resulting in a life sentence with the first 30 years to be served in prison. The victim, who suffers from a severe degenerative muscular disease, relied on Perez-y-Perez for daily care. Evidence presented during the week-long trial showed repeated physical abuse and threats. The case came to light when the victim sought help from the local Domestic Violence Outreach Office.

Red Cross Encourages Holiday Blood Donations
The American Red Cross is urging community members to donate blood or platelets to maintain the nation’s supply during the holiday season. Donors between December 8-18 will receive a $15 Amazon gift card, while donations from December 19 through January 4 will earn an exclusive Red Cross long-sleeved T-shirt, while supplies last.
