VAC Sees Increase in Needs as SNAP Benefits to Cease

With SNAP benefits expected to stop in November due to the federal shutdown, the Voluntary Action Center is preparing for a big rise in local food needs.

Director Miranda Bentley says over 20 new families signed up for help last week alone.
The VAC is asking for donations of canned goods, cereals, and pasta to keep shelves stocked.

Donations can be dropped off at 343 South Wall Street in Calhoun, or made online at voluntaryactioncenter.org.
The food pantry is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 to 2, no appointment needed.

Early Voting Continues Through Friday

Early voting continues this week at the Gordon County Courthouse from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On the ballot: two Public Service Commission seats, a school tax cut for seniors, city elections in Calhoun and Fairmount, and two one-cent sales tax proposals — the E-SPLOST and the FLOST.

If both pass, the sales tax rate will rise from 7% to 8%.

Election Day is Tuesday, and voters who usually cast ballots at the Calhoun Rec should vote instead at Belmont Baptist Church.
