GORDON COUNTY, GA – The National Weather Service has confirmed that two EF0 tornadoes touched down in Gordon County late Tuesday night, causing minor damage but no injuries or fatalities.
The first tornado began at 11:42 p.m. on May 20, approximately three miles northwest of Folsom. With estimated peak winds of 85 mph, it traveled 4.72 miles before lifting near Yarborough Mill Road at 11:49 p.m. Along its path, the tornado uprooted and snapped numerous trees, some falling onto homes, and caused structural damage including torn roofing from a chicken house, destruction of two sheds, and damage to a manufactured home. A pontoon boat was also flipped.
Just one minute later, a second EF0 tornado touched down near the intersection of Highway 53 and Foster Lusk Road, two miles west of Sonoraville. It traveled 2.39 miles with peak winds reaching 75 mph. This tornado destroyed a pole barn, damaged another, and caused tree damage along Erwin Road SE and Rosewood Drive. It lifted shortly before reaching Erwin Hill Road SE.
Both tornadoes were part of a larger mesocyclone that moved into Georgia from Alabama. Though radar coverage was limited due to the Hytop radar outage, the Peachtree City radar confirmed the presence of the storm system, which evolved from a supercell into a hybrid structure.
No injuries or fatalities were reported from either storm.
