Calhoun, GA – July 14, 2025 — The Gordon County Schools Board of Education proudly recognized two departments and their leaders during Monday night’s board meeting, celebrating outstanding contributions that continue to enhance the student experience across the district.

School Nutrition Department Earns Statewide Honor
The School Nutrition Department was celebrated for receiving the 2024 Turnip the Beet Gold Award, a prestigious honor from the Georgia Department of Education recognizing excellence in summer meal programs. Gordon County was one of only nine districts statewide to receive the top-level Gold designation, reflecting the department’s commitment to providing meals that are nutritious, appealing, and supportive of student well-being.

Central to the department’s success is Mrs. Nicole Head, Director of School Nutrition, whose leadership and dedication were applauded during the meeting. Mrs. Head has been instrumental in maintaining high standards and ensuring students receive quality meals year-round.

“Her unwavering focus on student health and readiness to learn is a vital part of our mission,” district officials noted.

Transportation Director Named Regional Leader of the Year
Also honored was Mr. Tim Watkins, Director of Transportation, who was named the Northwest Georgia RESA Transportation Director of the Year. Since taking on the role in 2019, Watkins has led the department with innovation and a strong emphasis on safety and efficiency.

Board members highlighted his efforts to improve bus routes and communication, as well as his hands-on approach—often stepping in to drive buses himself when needed. His dedication to student safety and well-being has earned him high praise from both colleagues and the community.

“Mr. Watkins leads with integrity and professionalism,” the Board said. “His care for our students and families is evident in everything he does.”

A Shared Commitment to Excellence
Superintendent leadership and board members expressed their gratitude for both Mrs. Head and Mr. Watkins, noting that their work not only supports day-to-day operations but also contributes to the broader success and safety of students.

“Please join us in congratulating these exceptional leaders,” the district shared. “They represent the very best of Gordon County Schools.”
