GCSO: Pursuit Ends with Arrest
At approximately 11:30 a.m. Monday, Calhoun Police were in pursuit of a Kia passenger vehicle when assistance was requested from the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies joined the chase, which continued westbound on State Route 53 (Rome Road). Near the Gordon–Floyd County line, a deputy successfully performed a PIT maneuver, bringing the pursuit to an end.
A female suspect was taken into custody at the scene. No injuries were reported.
Early Voting Continues Through Friday
Early voting remains open through Friday at the Gordon County Courthouse from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Statewide, voters will decide two Public Service Commission seats and a proposed school tax reduction plan for senior citizens. Locally, municipal elections are being held in two cities:
Fairmount: Incumbent Joanna Hopper Brannon faces challenger Thomas York.
Calhoun: Incumbent Councilman Ray Denmon is being challenged by Bruce Potts.
Also on the ballot are two penny sales tax referendums — the ESPLOST (Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) and the FLOST (a property tax–lowering sales tax). If both measures pass, the total local sales tax rate would increase to 8%, up from the current 7%.
Election Day is Tuesday. All polling locations will be open. Voters who normally cast ballots at the Calhoun Recreation Department should vote at Belmont Baptist Church due to ongoing construction at the recreation facility.
As of Monday, early voting totals were as follows:
Fairmount: 4 voters
Gordon County (unincorporated): 368 voters
City of Calhoun: 459 voters
City Council Work Session Updates
During Monday’s Calhoun City Council work session, officials discussed several ongoing and upcoming projects:
College Street Infrastructure Work: Construction continues between Fain Street and East Line Street, with detours clearly marked. Work is expected to last approximately two more weeks, weather permitting. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes.
Fields Ferry Golf Course Upgrades: The course will receive a new irrigation system along with several other improvements. A committee has identified priorities including a new pump house, cart path repairs, and enhancements to the putting and chipping greens. Council members expressed general support for moving forward with the project.
Local Food Banks Facing Increased Demand
With the potential suspension of SNAP benefits on November 1, local food assistance organizations are reporting critical needs.
The VAC (Voluntary Action Center) has seen a daily increase in working families seeking food support. Carol’s Closet is requesting donations of diapers, formula, wipes, and personal hygiene items to assist families who may need to redirect limited funds toward groceries.
Residents are encouraged to donate nonperishable food items directly to the VAC or contribute online at gordoncountyunitedway.com. Every $100 donated helps provide meals for approximately 15 people.
