As temperatures begin to dip and colder weather sets in, many residents are firing up their heaters and preparing for the winter season. Local fire officials are reminding the community to stay safe while keeping warm.
According to Calhoun Fire Department Chief of Fire Prevention Tim Duvall and Gordon County Fire & Rescue Chief Heath Derryberry, this time of year sees an increase in house fires — often caused by portable heaters, fireplaces, and other heating sources, as well as heightened cooking activity during the holiday season.
Officials note that a few simple precautions can greatly reduce the risk of fire in the home. Residents are urged to follow these safety tips:
Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from space heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves.
Always turn off space heaters when leaving a room or going to sleep.
Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected annually by a qualified professional.
Never use an oven to heat your home.
Test smoke alarms monthly and make sure carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.
Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets, not extension cords or power strips.
Both departments encourage residents to share these safety reminders with family, friends, and neighbors to help keep the community safe throughout the winter season.
