Verizon Customers Nationwide Hit by Major Outage

Verizon Wireless customers across the United States experienced widespread service disruptions Wednesday morning following a major network outage. Many users reported being unable to make calls, send text messages or access mobile data, with some phones switching to SOS mode.

The outage began shortly after 9 a.m. EST and escalated quickly. Outage-tracking website Downdetector logged more than 113,000 reports at its peak, with issues reported in major metropolitan areas including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and Washington, D.C. Verizon confirmed the disruption in a statement, saying engineers were actively working to restore service.


Community Invited to Say Goodbye to Billy Bearden Center

Local residents will have an opportunity this week to say their final goodbyes to a longtime Calhoun community landmark. The Calhoun Recreation Department will host a public open house at the Billy Bearden Center, located at 601 S. River St., on Friday, Jan. 16.

The building will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ahead of its planned demolition, allowing community members to visit the facility one last time and reflect on its role in the city’s history.


CDC Warns of Severe Flu Season as Georgia Hospitals Fill Up

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning of one of the worst flu outbreaks in many years, with urgent care centers and emergency rooms across Georgia reporting high patient volumes.

Health officials urge anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms to stay home when possible to help reduce the spread of illness. Recommended flu prevention tips include:

  • Washing hands frequently with soap and water

  • Avoiding close contact with sick individuals

  • Covering coughs and sneezes

  • Disinfecting commonly touched surfaces

  • Staying home when sick and seeking medical care if symptoms worsen
