Gordon County Fire & Rescue (GCF&R) is continuing preparations ahead of anticipated winter weather that could impact the area in the coming days. Department leadership and operational personnel have been closely monitoring weather forecasts, reviewing response plans, and confirming readiness to help ensure the safety of residents and visitors.
Winter weather typically brings an increase in emergency calls, including fires, medical emergencies, and vehicle accidents. In anticipation of higher call volumes—particularly due to potentially icy road conditions—GCF&R has increased staffing levels and placed additional apparatus in service to maintain a timely and effective emergency response.
Cold temperatures and possible power outages can also elevate the risk of residential fires. Officials are urging residents to use heating equipment safely and take extra precautions during extreme weather conditions.
Winter Fire Safety Tips include:
-
Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn
-
Never use ovens, grills, or open flames to heat homes
-
Operate generators outdoors only and away from doors and windows
-
Ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly
-
Avoid overloading extension cords or electrical outlets
Fire crews remain prepared to respond to fire suppression calls, medical emergencies, vehicle crashes, and other weather-related incidents. Apparatus readiness, station staffing, and contingency plans have been reviewed and adjusted as conditions warrant.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather conditions, limit travel during icy periods, and practice fire-safe behaviors throughout the storm.
