Calhoun Rec Playground Closed for New Installation
The playground located on the “old side” of the Calhoun Recreation Department at 601 South River Street near the baseball fields is temporarily closed as crews remove existing equipment to make way for a new playground. Officials say the area will remain closed until the new equipment is installed and ready for use. Visitors are asked to avoid the area while work is underway to ensure everyone’s safety.

Railroad Crossing Closure Planned on SR 136/Nickelsville Road
Motorists in Gordon County should prepare for a temporary road closure as work continues at the State Route 136/Nickelsville Road railroad crossing at U.S. Highway 41. The crossing is scheduled to be closed from Tuesday, March 10, through Thursday, March 12, weather permitting. During the closure, drivers traveling on the west side of the crossing will be detoured south on U.S. Highway 41 to State Route 225, then north on SR 225 back to SR 136. Drivers are urged to expect delays, slow down, and watch for crews working near the roadway.

Homestead Exemption Deadline Approaching for Homeowners
Gordon County homeowners are being reminded that the deadline to apply for a homestead exemption is April 1, 2026. Chief Appraiser Ashley Bailey and Tax Commissioner Scott Clements encourage eligible residents to apply, noting that the State of Georgia offers several exemptions and Gordon County provides five additional local options. Local exemptions are available for homeowners age 65, 70, and — new this year — 75. Residents who already receive the basic homestead exemption but reached one of those age milestones in the past year are encouraged to contact the Tax Assessor’s Office for a “homestead checkup.” Applications will be accepted through April 1, and additional applications may be submitted during the property assessment appeal period later in the year. More information is available at gordongassessors.com or by calling 706-629-6812.

Calhoun Animal Control at Full Capacity
Calhoun Animal Control officials say the shelter has reached full capacity and cannot accept additional dogs until space becomes available. Every kennel at the facility is currently full, creating challenges for staff and the animals already in care. Officials are asking the community to help by adopting dogs or sharing adoption posts on social media. Shelter staff say each adoption opens space for another dog that may urgently need care, and community support is critical to relieving overcrowding.

Severe Storms Possible Wednesday Night into Thursday
The National Weather Service is warning residents across north and central Georgia to stay alert for potentially strong to severe storms Wednesday night into Thursday as a cold front moves through the region. Forecasters say several rounds of storms could develop, with some capable of producing damaging wind gusts. Hail up to 1 inch in diameter is possible, and a brief tornado cannot be ruled out. The greatest risk for severe weather is expected in areas north of Interstate 85. Residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings overnight.
