A massive fire broke out Monday afternoon at the historic Floyd County Courthouse in downtown Rome.

Officials say the 1892 landmark was undergoing renovations when flames were reported around 2:20 p.m.

The fire caused the collapse of the courthouse’s iconic bell tower, and the building sustained heavy damage.

Despite the intensity of the fire, all employees were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.


In Gordon County, local government meetings are underway.

The Calhoun City Council met Monday, with leaders holding a lengthy executive session to discuss confidential matters before returning to public business.

Meanwhile, the Gordon County General Administration Committee meets today at 3:00 p.m., focusing on departmental updates and budget discussions.

Topics include planning and zoning, elections, tax assessments, and updates from finance, IT, and human resources.


Gordon County schools are celebrating strong performances at the GHSA State Literary Championships.

Calhoun High School captured the Class 3A State Championship, continuing its tradition of excellence.

GDOT crews continue work along Highway 136 and US 41, with some activity still underway following a recent railroad crossing closure.

Additional bridge inspections and maintenance are ongoing, along with local paving and repairs, including work on Wrights Hollow Road.
