Gordon County is under an Extreme Heat Warning as dangerously hot temperatures and oppressive humidity continue across northwest Georgia. The warning is in effect from noon until 8 p.m. Thursday, with heat index values expected to reach 108 to 111 degrees.
The National Weather Service warns that these conditions significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for older adults, young children, people with chronic medical conditions, and anyone working or spending extended time outdoors.
Residents are urged to:
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Limit outdoor activities during the hottest afternoon hours.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- Stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
- Check on elderly family members, neighbors, and others who may be vulnerable.
- Never leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.
Anyone who must work outdoors should take frequent breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned location. Employers are encouraged to adjust work schedules when possible to reduce the risk of heat-related illness.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Symptoms include confusion, loss of consciousness, a high body temperature, and hot, dry skin. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should be moved to a cooler location immediately, and 911 should be called without delay.
