Gordon County is under an Extreme Heat Warning as dangerously hot temperatures and oppressive humidity continue across northwest Georgia. The warning is in effect from noon until 8 p.m. Thursday, with heat index values expected to reach 108 to 111 degrees.

The National Weather Service warns that these conditions significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for older adults, young children, people with chronic medical conditions, and anyone working or spending extended time outdoors.

Residents are urged to:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Limit outdoor activities during the hottest afternoon hours.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
  • Check on elderly family members, neighbors, and others who may be vulnerable.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.

Anyone who must work outdoors should take frequent breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned location. Employers are encouraged to adjust work schedules when possible to reduce the risk of heat-related illness.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Symptoms include confusion, loss of consciousness, a high body temperature, and hot, dry skin. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should be moved to a cooler location immediately, and 911 should be called without delay.

Forecasters say the dangerous heat is expected to continue through the Independence Day holiday weekend, with only isolated afternoon thunderstorms offering limited relief. Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts and weather alerts as conditions continue to evolve.
