The Calhoun City Council approved an annexation and rezoning request Monday night that clears the way for the proposed relocation of BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir to a new site on Red Bud Road.
The request was considered during the council’s July 6 meeting, where a crowd attended the public hearing to voice concerns about the proposal.
The council approved the annexation and rezoning of approximately 29.04 acres located at 1786 Red Bud Road (Parcel 055-062). The property, which also adjoins Newtown Church Road near the Food Lion shopping center, was rezoned from Gordon County Agricultural to C-N (Neighborhood Commercial).
The application was submitted by BCD Law on behalf of PRAMUKH 100 CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT LLC.
According to information presented during the meeting, the property is planned to become the new home of BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, the Hindu temple that has been located for many years at 215 West Line Street near the railroad tracks across from Calhoun Wholesale.
The proposal drew significant public interest, with numerous residents attending the meeting and speaking during the public hearing about the annexation and rezoning request.
With the council’s approval, the project can now move forward through the city’s development process as plans continue for the construction of the new temple on Red Bud Road.
