Gordon County Fire Safety and Residential Updates
We are tracking reports of an overnight fire in the Hunters Crossing subdivision. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported; however, the family has been displaced and is receiving assistance from the Red Cross. Following the incident, we were joined on-air by GCFR Chief Heath Derryberry, who reported the fire was apparently caused by an air fryer. Chief Derryberry used this opportunity to remind listeners to check the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, maintain an exit plan with two ways out, never re-enter a burning structure, and ensure appliances are never left unattended.
Community Outreach: Animal Control and Spay/Neuter Programs
We were also joined by Gordon County Animal Control Director Dustin Wilbanks and Assistant Administrator Keith King to discuss local resources for pet owners. The county is offering spay and neuter certificates for $95 for dogs and $85 for cats. These certificates are accepted by several local veterinary clinics and include a rabies vaccination. Additionally, adoptions at the shelter are free, and volunteers are always welcome. For more information, please contact the shelter at 706-629-3327.

Operation Southern Slowdown
State law enforcement is continuing its focus on Operation Southern Slowdown. Calhoun Police Captain Christy Nicholson joined us recently to outline the campaign’s goals, which emphasize a coordinated effort to reduce speeding and aggressive driving on local highways. Residents should expect an increased presence of law enforcement as officers work to improve road safety.
2026 Property Assessment Notices
The Gordon County Board of Assessors has issued 2026 property assessment notices. Residents should be aware that this notice is not a tax bill; it serves to inform owners of their property’s fair market value as of January 1, 2026. If property information or exemptions are incorrect, there is a 45-day appeal period ending on August 14, 2026. For assistance, please call the Board of Assessors at (706) 629-6812.
Health Advisory: Cyclosporiasis
Health officials are monitoring a multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis. The Georgia Department of Public Health has confirmed there are no known Georgia-specific outbreaks or direct links to these national cases at this time. Residents are encouraged to practice safe food handling by rinsing fresh produce thoroughly, using a produce brush, and refrigerating cut or cooked items promptly.
