A serious motor vehicle accident on Interstate 75 in Gordon County has prompted a shutdown of the interstate and significant traffic delays Sunday afternoon.
According to the Calhoun Police Department, emergency personnel responded to the crash just south of Exit 312, near the Highway 53 interchange, approximately an hour before the traffic alert was issued.
Authorities reported that Interstate 75 was shut down as emergency crews worked at the scene.
The closure is also expected to cause heavy congestion along Highway 53 as motorists are diverted off the interstate.
Calhoun Police are urging drivers to seek alternate routes, allow additional travel time and use extreme caution when traveling through the area.
The severity of any injuries and the number of vehicles involved have not yet been released.
Motorists traveling through Gordon County should anticipate significant delays until the roadway can be reopened.
Authorities have not announced an estimated time for reopening the interstate.
This is a developing story, and additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
