A Flash Flood Warning has been issued for parts of northwest Georgia as heavy rain and thunderstorms move through the area Tuesday night.
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City issued the warning at 7:44 p.m. Tuesday for portions of Gordon, Gilmer, Murray, and Pickens counties. The warning remains in effect until 1:45 a.m. Wednesday.
According to the alert, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall across the warned area. Between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain had already fallen by Tuesday evening, with an additional 1 to 1.5 inches possible overnight.
Officials warned that flash flooding is either already occurring or is expected to begin shortly. Flooding may impact small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, and other low-lying or poor drainage areas.
Communities that could experience flooding include Fairmount, Ranger, Oakman, Carters, Ramhurst, Tails Creek, and Fort Mountain State Park.
Emergency officials are urging motorists to avoid flooded roadways and remember the safety message: “Turn around, don’t drown.” Most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
Drivers are also advised to use extra caution overnight, when flooded areas can be more difficult to recognize.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and be prepared to move to higher ground if flooding develops.
