Gordon County property owners who disagree with their annual property tax assessment have until Friday, Aug. 14, to file an appeal with the Gordon County Tax Assessors Office.
The office mailed the annual Notices of Assessment on Tuesday, June 30, and officials say property owners should have received them by now. Assessment information is also available online through the Gordon County Tax Assessors website.
According to the Tax Assessors Office, this year’s notices look different because of changes required under Senate Bill 544 and Senate Bill 33. The Georgia Department of Revenue introduced a new assessment notice template that places greater emphasis on information property owners can act on immediately, including their property’s fair market value, exemptions, and appeal rights.
The updated notices include the previous year’s fair market value, the current year’s fair market value, any changes affecting the property’s value, expanded information about the appeals process and deadlines, a clearer display of exemptions, estimated tax savings, homestead exemptions that may be filed during the appeal period, and homestead reporting requirements.
The new format no longer includes estimated property taxes, rollback rates, or the property’s assessed value, which is calculated at 40% of fair market value under Georgia law.
Property owners who believe their property’s assessed value is inaccurate or have questions about their assessment are encouraged to review their notice promptly, as appeals must be submitted by Aug. 14.
