[Elections: Early Voting] We begin with election logistics. Today marks the final day to cast your early ballot in Georgia. Early voting centers will close this evening, and the statewide General Election will officially conclude this Tuesday, November 3rd. While early turnout has broken records across the state, several rural counties are currently tracking at the lower end of voter participation. If you still need to vote, you can confirm your designated polling place and verify required ID by visiting the Georgia Secretary of State’s official My Voter Page. Through yesterday, 8235 voters have cast their votes in Gordon County. Our participation is lower – as a percentage of registered voters – than 151 of Georgia’s 159 counties
[Corporate Business: Mohawk Industries] Turning to the local economy, Calhoun-based Mohawk Industries has reported its third-quarter financial results, highlighting a complex operating environment. The flooring manufacturer managed a bottom-line beat, posting an adjusted EPS of $2.72. However, the company’s flat revenue of $2.78 billion masks a 4% drop in actual sales volume. Mohawk successfully protected its profit margins by leaning on price increases to offset inflation. Looking ahead, management issued a cautious forecast for the fourth quarter with earnings guidance coming in significantly below Wall Street’s expectations.
[Economic Outlook: Macro Finances] Mohawk’s subdued fourth-quarter expectations reflect broader, compounding financial pressures across the national economy. The housing market remains paralyzed by the “lock-in effect,” as homeowners refuse to abandon historically low mortgage rates. This lack of housing turnover is starving the market of the new home purchases that traditionally trigger major renovation projects. At the same time, the middle class is navigating severe financial fatigue. While overall retail sales appear stable on paper, that stability is a mirage sustained by higher prices, not higher sales volume. Consumers have shifted into a defensive posture, prioritizing essential daily costs and aggressively deferring big-ticket discretionary purchases.
[Community Action: DFCS Christmas Drive] In local community news, the Gordon County Division of Family and Children Services is asking for your help to bring some holiday magic to local boys and girls in foster care. DFCS is currently looking for individuals, groups, churches, and businesses to sponsor a child for the holidays. You can get involved by requesting a child’s specific Christmas list. To sign up, please contact Jody Sanderson at 706-802-2995 or send an email to [email protected].
[Local Sports: Lady Phoenix Softball] On the diamond, a massive congratulations to the Lady Phoenix softball team. The girls are headed to the GHSA State Tournament Final Four after shutting out Morgan County 4-0 yesterday afternoon. Pitcher Kinsley Lovins earned the win on the mound with Jayda White stepping in to close out the game. The team tallied eight total hits, with Keegan Angel leading the offense at the plate with two. The Lady Phoenix will look to keep their playoff run alive tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. when they face Brantley County.
[Local Arts: CHS One Act Play] Rounding out our local updates with fantastic news from the stage—Calhoun High School’s One Act team is officially Region Champions. The Yellow Jackets took home the top prize for their production of “Big Fish.” A special shoutout goes to Grant Garnett and Joseph Jones, who both earned All-Star Cast honors for their standout performances. Congratulations to the cast and crew of the CHS theater program!
