Local Government & Elections
The Calhoun Mayor and City Council will hold their regular meeting this coming Monday. The day begins with a noon work session at the Calhoun Utilities Training Center, followed by the regular session at 7:00 PM at The Depot. It is widely expected that the final budgets for both the city and the city school system will pass.
In election news, the Gordon County Board of Elections and Voter Registration meets Monday at 3:00 PM to certify the June 16th General Primary Runoff Election. The board will also prepare for the Public Service Commission recount beginning June 23rd and the runoff election audit starting June 26th.
Public Safety & Incident Reports
A severe industrial accident occurred yesterday at the site of the new apartments on Bellwood Road. A worker fell from a makeshift bucket lift without safety harnesses and was airlifted by Life Flight to Erlanger Hospital in serious condition.
At yesterday’s Gordon County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) meeting, Kerry Foods announced a production expansion at their Calhoun facility. In emergency services, all Gordon County Fire Rescue (GCFR) recruits and one Calhoun Fire Department (CFD) student passed their basic firefighter exams. GCFR Chief Heath Derryberry anticipates a new warehouse-capable ladder truck by December, and AdventHealth has introduced a new ambulance unit. For the public, CFD Prevention Chief Tim Duvall announced available mobile fire extinguisher training, while Chief Mike Shutz shared upcoming Stop the Bleed classes.
In local law enforcement, overnight arrests by Gordon County sheriff’s deputies included:
Nelson Jose Carmeno-Hernandez, 36, for Terroristic Threats and Acts, and Theft by Taking.
Edward Lewis Delia, 62, for Possession and Use of Drug Related Objects, Cocaine, and Methamphetamine.
Derek Albert Elam, 35, for Aggravated Stalking FVA.
Eric Mac Roach, 26, for a Special Presentment O/C: Aggravated Assault.
State & Regional News
At the state capitol, the special legislative session continues to draw heavy criticism as it burns through an estimated $40,000 in daily taxpayer funds. Lawmakers have abandoned the original redistricting mandate to push a controversial property tax shift that raises sales tax rates, which critics warn will hurt renters, local businesses, and local government revenues.
In regional banking, Matt Robbins, president and CEO of River City Bank in Rome, has been elected to a three-year term on the Georgia Bankers Association board of directors.

Sports Update
Thursday’s Atlanta Braves game against the San Francisco Giants was rained out and rescheduled for August 31. The team begins a three-game home series tonight against the Milwaukee Brewers at Truist Park, with first pitch scheduled for 7:15 PM.
