CALHOUN, GA – Christian Community Outreach is gearing up for its annual Back to School Bash, scheduled for this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Calhoun Recreation Department. The event, now in its eighth year, aims to provide local students with essential school supplies, clothing, and shoes before the new school year begins.
Sherrie Turner, Christian Community Outreach Director, joined community leaders Monday morning to share details about the event. Last year, more than 1,000 students were served, and organizers are preparing for even more this year.
Turner says they are especially in need of school clothes for children ages 5 to 14. Community members wishing to help can donate items or contribute financially through Venmo (@christiancommunity_outreach) or CashApp ($ccoministry).
Meanwhile, Gordon County Fire Rescue (GCFR) responded to two unrelated structure fires in the early morning hours of Monday. One fire occurred off Red Bud Road, and the other was in Oostanaula. Both incidents resulted in thousands of dollars in damages, but no injuries were reported. Firefighters quickly contained and extinguished both blazes.
And in a rare turn of events for downtown Calhoun, a black bear brought traffic — and pedestrians — to a standstill on Monday evening after climbing into a magnolia tree near City Park. Authorities closed North Wall Street between Trammell and Line streets as a precaution while wildlife officials monitored the bear.
A heavy thunderstorm around 10 p.m. eventually cleared most of the crowds. Wildlife officers later safely rescued and relocated the bear to a safe, undisclosed area.
