    Wind chills from 5 to 15 above across much of north and portions of Middle Georgia are expected with wind chills as cold as 0 in the north Georgia mountains. Avoid prolonged exposure if possible and have a safe heating source, particularly for those who may be experiencing power outages.

Gordon County Announces Warming Shelter Openings for Saturday Night

Gordon County Emergency Management Agency, in partnership with the Voluntary Action Center, has announced updated warming shelter information for tonight, Saturday, January 24, 2026, as cold weather conditions continue to impact the area.

Following an assessment of available resources, officials confirmed that three warming shelters will be open to provide residents with a safe, heated place to stay overnight.

The following locations will be available:

Crane Eater Community Church
This shelter will open Saturday at 5:00 p.m., with closure based on weather conditions. It is open to families and individuals. Pets are allowed with a crate.

Providence Men’s Shelter
Opened Friday at 6:00 p.m., this shelter will remain open with closure based on weather conditions. It is available to men only, and pets are not allowed.

Fairmount Community Center
This location will open Saturday as needed. Transportation assistance is available by contacting Fairmount Police Department at 706-337-5503.

All warming shelters will provide a heated space where individuals can sit, rest, and stay warm overnight. Light food, snacks, and drinks will also be available. Guests are expected to respect the facilities, volunteers, and others using the shelters. Anyone who fails to follow these expectations or causes property damage may be asked to leave.

Emergency officials note that additional warming shelters may be opened on an as-needed basis as weather conditions evolve. Residents are encouraged to monitor local updates and share this information with anyone who may need assistance staying warm during the cold temperatures.
