The Gordon County Board of Commissioners recognized the dedication and service of the Gordon County Public Works Department during its meeting on Tuesday, May 19, by issuing a proclamation in honor of National Public Works Week.
The recognition celebrated the department, led by Public Works Director Rusty Hogan, for its ongoing efforts to maintain and improve infrastructure throughout Gordon County.
National Public Works Week was observed May 17-23 this year and is sponsored annually by the American Public Works Association. The 2026 theme, “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community,” highlights the vital role public works employees play in supporting everyday life through both visible projects and behind-the-scenes operations.
County officials noted that the Gordon County Public Works Department handles a wide range of responsibilities that directly impact residents across the community. Those duties include paving county roads listed on the annual paving schedule, resurfacing projects, Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) work, and triple surface treatment projects.
The department is also responsible for maintaining paved and unpaved county roads, bridges, rights-of-way, stormwater drainage systems, ditches, and eight watersheds throughout the county. Public Works crews additionally assist with repairs to county-owned properties, roadside weed management, and special projects for other county departments.
Other responsibilities include issuing timber permits and generating county revenue through the sale of driveway culvert pipe.
Commissioners praised the department for its continued commitment to serving the community and ensuring county infrastructure remains safe and functional for residents and travelers alike.
