City Council Moves Forward with Key Projects Calhoun’s City Council has officially cleared the way for two significant building projects spearheaded by local religious institutions. During their regular meeting on Monday night, council members voted in favor of measures authorizing the construction of a new preschool downtown at First Baptist Church and the development of a new Hindu temple located off Red Bud Road.
Councilman Bruce Potts Joins the Show We were pleased to be joined this week by Calhoun City Council member Bruce Potts for an in-depth conversation regarding the city’s future. Councilman Potts provided clarity on the council’s current stance on data centers, emphasizing the city’s careful approach to ensuring new development aligns with community infrastructure standards. We also touched on broader economic development initiatives and the ongoing commitment to enhancing recreation opportunities for all Calhoun residents.
County Commission Extends Moratorium The Gordon County Board of Commissioners has formally extended its moratorium on data centers and biodigester facilities until late January 2027. County Administrator Jim Ledbetter noted that this timeline is essential for developing comprehensive ordinances and separating facts from misinformation, reassuring residents that no formal submissions have been made for data centers in unincorporated Gordon County. Commissioner Chad Steward highlighted this as a strategic, methodical approach to growth.
FLOST Tax Revenue & Property Relief Administrator Ledbetter also provided a positive update on FLOST tax collections, noting that over $6 million is now available to be applied toward property tax relief for the current year. Commissioner Steward reminded listeners that approximately 40 percent of these funds are collected from non-residents traveling through our area via I-75, effectively subsidizing local relief. We look forward to diving deeper into these figures this coming Monday with Keith King and Tax Assessor Ashley Bailey.
Community Programming & Local Recognition The community calendar remains busy with library events, including the Lonnie C. King, Jr. Traveling Exhibit now hosting conversations at the Calhoun-Gordon County Public Library. Additionally, we are proud to share that Missy Bingiel was named the Georgia APCO Telecommunications Officer of the Month for July 2026. Bingiel, a dedicated 911 communications veteran since 1999, is celebrated for her compassion and for continuing a family legacy of public service here in Gordon County.
A Note on Safety While today’s weather will be warm, with highs near 90 degrees and high humidity, please continue to exercise caution in the heat. Stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day, and keep an eye on neighbors who may be vulnerable to high temperatures.
