The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) has declared a statewide Level 1 Drought Response, calling on residents to begin voluntary water conservation efforts as dry conditions persist across Georgia.
The declaration, issued April 27, 2026, follows an evaluation of drought severity and its impact on water resources. The Level 1 response applies to public water systems that rely on both surface water and groundwater sources.
Under the guidelines, residents are asked to limit outdoor landscape watering to the hours between 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. each day. Officials say watering during these times helps reduce evaporation and improves efficiency.
While the restrictions are not mandatory at this stage, the EPD is encouraging residents to take proactive steps to conserve water and protect local supplies. Recommended measures include checking for and repairing leaks both inside and outside the home, turning off the tap when not in use, and ensuring sprinklers are properly adjusted to avoid watering sidewalks, streets, or buildings.
Officials say early conservation efforts can help prevent more severe restrictions if dry conditions continue.
The Level 1 designation is the first stage in Georgia’s drought response plan and serves as a precautionary measure aimed at preserving water resources across the state.
