Yesterday’s Gordon County Board of Commissioners Budget Meeting was an informative update to the critical needs of our county. HB 581 – the Homestead Exemption law passed by the state – leaves a sizable hole in the county’s budget.  For the first time in several years a slight increase in the millage is recommended by the county’s professional staff.  This would amount to a tax increase of about $40.00 on a house valued at 225,000 dollars.  This is not, according to the information at the meeting, money that will be used to fund increases in non-essential spending.   In fact, the data presented shows a spending decrease of over 1.5 million dollars.  Several county departments are experiencing cuts; according to Jim Ledbetter, this zero-based budgeting method will allow for amendment hearings if needs become critical.  Further hearings will be held.
