A veteran deputy with the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office has been recognized for his quick actions that likely prevented a tragedy last week.

According to the sheriff’s office, Lieutenant Chad Phillips was on patrol Thursday afternoon, May 7, along U.S. Highway 41 near the CSX Railway overpass when he noticed a woman lying on the railroad tracks.

Authorities said Lieutenant Phillips immediately stopped and rushed to the woman’s aid on foot. He was able to wake the woman, who reportedly appeared inebriated, and remove her from the tracks before summoning emergency medical personnel.

The woman later told responders she had intentionally placed herself on the tracks, according to officials. She was transported from the scene by ambulance for medical treatment.

On Monday, Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston presented Lieutenant Phillips with the GCSO Meritorious Service Medal in recognition of his actions during the incident.

Officials said Lieutenant Phillips’ actions “quite probably prevented a tragedy.” His citation stated that his “keen observational skills and calmness under stress were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Office of Sheriff.”

This marks the second life-saving recognition of Lieutenant Phillips’ law enforcement career. In September 2010, Phillips and two fellow deputy sheriffs rescued the driver of a burning vehicle along Interstate 75.

Sheriff’s office officials praised Phillips for his professionalism, awareness, and commitment to protecting the public during critical situations.
