Summer Feeding Programs
Free summer meals are coming to our community next week for all children and teens aged 18 and under. Local school districts are preparing mobile routes and pickup hubs to ensure no child goes hungry while classes are out for the season.
This local expansion is made possible by federal policy. Extended funding and increased flexibility from the Biden administration’s Keep Kids Fed Act and the permanent USDA SUN Programs allow schools to use flexible, non-congregate distribution models. Instead of requiring children to eat meals on-site, local schools can now utilize buses, vans, and multi-day meal boxes to bring food directly into local neighborhoods.
Here is what you need to know about the upcoming schedules:
Gordon County Schools will operate Monday through Thursday, June 1st to July 23rd, taking a brief pause the week of July 4th. Look and listen for school buses and white vans delivering meals directly to marked neighborhood stops, or pick up food daily from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Tolbert Elementary and Sonoraville High.
Calhoun City Schools will run mobile deliveries Monday through Friday along standard city bus routes starting June 1st. Friday deliveries will include extra weekend meals. Stationary pickup sites are available across town, including the Calhoun Complex, Calhoun High, local apartment complexes, and the Gordon County Library.
Special 7-day meal boxes are also being offered by Calhoun City Schools as an alternative option. These large boxes will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis in the rear lot of Calhoun Elementary School on June 26th and July 23rd from noon to 3:00 PM.
Memorial Day Holiday Traffic Stats
State law enforcement officials are urging extreme caution as we look back at a sobering and dangerous holiday travel period.
The Georgia Department of Public Safety released final statewide crash statistics from this past Memorial Day weekend, revealing a high volume of dangerous decisions on state roads:
11 traffic fatalities were reported statewide by all law enforcement agencies over the 78-hour holiday travel period.
State Troopers responded to 235 total crashes, which resulted in 134 injuries. Twenty-seven of those accidents involved drivers operating under the influence.
Enforcement hit historic highs over the weekend, with state officers executing 287 DUI arrests, issuing 565 distracted driving citations, and ticketing 755 seatbelt violations.
Authorities remind all motorists that every driver plays a role in getting everyone home safely. As summer travel season officially begins, law enforcement will continue working around the clock—but they need you to slow down, put the phones away, and never drive impaired.
