Today is the last day for early voting at the Gordon County Courthouse from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., ahead of Election Day on November 4th. On the ballot, voters will consider statewide races for two Public Service Commission seats and a school tax reduction plan for senior citizens. Locally, city elections are underway in Fairmount, where incumbent Joanna Hopper Brannon faces Thomas York, and in Calhoun, Councilman Ray Denmon is challenged by Bruce Potts. Residents will also vote on two one-cent sales tax measures — the E-SPLOST and FLOST — which, if approved, would raise the local sales tax rate from 7% to 8%.
The Gordon County Voluntary Action Center is calling on the community for donations of canned goods, boxed meals, and other nonperishable food items to help families in need as local demand for food assistance continues to rise. Donations can be dropped off during regular VAC hours at their facility.
As Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend, residents are reminded to set clocks back one hour on Sunday morning. This is also a good time to test smoke detectors in your home, replace batteries if needed, and ensure that devices are working properly — working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half.
From all of us at GA 101.7 WJTH Radio, have a safe and happy Halloween!
