The Gordon County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is urging residents to begin preparing for potentially significant winter weather this weekend, as confidence continues to increase in the forecasted impacts across north and central Georgia.
According to Gordon EMA, the National Weather Service indicates a greater than 90 percent chance of precipitation during the weekend. However, officials say the situation remains complex due to a challenging combination of Arctic air moving into the region and moisture streaming in from the Gulf of Mexico. The timing and intensity of the cold air will ultimately determine the severity of winter weather impacts.
Unlike the recent rain and snow event, EMA officials caution that this system could pose a more serious ice threat, which has the potential to cause hazardous travel conditions, power outages, and other disruptions.
Gordon EMA announced it will begin participating in special National Weather Service webinars starting Wednesday at 2 p.m. to closely monitor the evolving forecast. Additional email updates will be provided daily as more information becomes available.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official National Weather Service updates and local emergency management communications, and to begin preparing now to ensure they can care for themselves and their families should severe winter conditions develop.
Officials stress that forecast changes are likely in the coming days and advise the public to remain alert as the situation unfolds.
