A 39-year-old Calhoun woman was seriously injured Sunday afternoon after swerving to avoid debris on Interstate 75 in Whitfield County, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The single-vehicle crash occurred around 1:28 p.m. on June 28 in the northbound lanes near mile marker 323, close to Resaca.

Troopers say the woman attempted to avoid debris in the roadway, causing her vehicle to travel onto the right shoulder. The vehicle then struck an embankment before overturning.

Due to the severity of her injuries, Whitfield County 911 requested a LifeForce medical helicopter. The woman was airlifted to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga with what the Georgia State Patrol described as serious injuries.

To allow the helicopter to land safely, first responders temporarily closed the northbound lanes of I-75 from approximately 1:52 p.m. until 2:19 p.m.

Traffic has since resumed, and all northbound lanes are back open.
