The Gordon County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing next week on a proposed ordinance that would establish new environmental safety and development standards for a wide range of commercial and industrial operations in the county’s unincorporated areas.

The public hearing is scheduled for Monday, July 13, at 6:00 p.m. at the Gordon County Administration Building, located at 201 North Wall Street in Calhoun.

According to the public notice, the proposed ordinance, titled “An Ordinance Relating to Environmental Safety Protocols for Commercial and Industrial Operations,” would create regulations covering environmental safety standards, operational requirements, zoning regulations, buffering, security measures, pollution prevention protocols, and development standards for certain commercial and industrial facilities.

The ordinance would apply to several types of operations, including:

  • Data centers and data management/processing facilities
  • Commercial cryptocurrency mining facilities
  • Industrial warehouses and logistics operations
  • Bio-gas digester facilities
  • Manufacturing and processing facilities
  • Research and technology parks
  • Energy production and storage facilities
  • Waste management and recycling facilities
  • Other commercial and industrial operations as defined within the ordinance

Following the Planning Commission’s public hearing and recommendation, the Gordon County Board of Commissioners is scheduled to consider the proposed ordinance during its regular meeting on Tuesday, July 21, at 6:00 p.m., also at the Gordon County Administration Building.

The public notice states that a copy of the proposed ordinance is available for review at the Gordon County Planning and Development Department during normal business hours.

However, representatives of the community group No Data Centers say they had not seen the proposed ordinance posted for public review as of July 4.

Residents interested in the proposed regulations are encouraged to attend the public hearing and provide comments before the Planning Commission makes its recommendation.
