The Georgia Department of Transportation is suspending interstate lane closures statewide for the upcoming Memorial Day travel period to help reduce traffic delays and improve safety for motorists traveling during the busy holiday weekend.
According to Georgia DOT, interstate lane closures will be suspended beginning Friday, May 22, at noon through Tuesday, May 26, at 5 a.m. Officials say the temporary suspension is intended to help accommodate increased holiday travel across Georgia.
Transportation officials caution that while most lane closures will be lifted, some long-term construction zones may remain active for safety reasons, and emergency-related closures could still occur if necessary.
Georgia DOT expects increased traffic throughout the state, especially around tourist destinations and major interstate corridors.
In Northwest Georgia, Interstate 24 near Chattanooga and Interstate 75 in the Chattanooga area are both expected to experience light congestion during the holiday travel period. Interstate 20 near the Alabama state line is also predicted to see light congestion, while Interstate 85 and Interstate 185 in West Georgia could experience moderate traffic levels.
Officials are encouraging drivers to remain alert in work zones, slow down near roadside crews, and obey Georgia’s Move Over Law when approaching emergency or service vehicles stopped along highways.
Travelers are also encouraged to check real-time traffic conditions before traveling by visiting the 511 Georgia website or using the free 511GA mobile app.
