Gordon County residents have a busy week ahead, with Election Day, city and county meetings, fuel tax relief, and public safety efforts all making local headlines.

Gordon County recorded 2,921 advance ballots during early voting ahead of Tuesday’s General Primary Election. Polls will be open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

A major precinct change is also in effect for some Calhoun voters. The polling location normally held at the Calhoun Recreation Department has been moved to the Belmont Baptist Church Family Life Center on West Belmont Drive. Voters are encouraged to confirm their polling location before heading out.

Drivers will also continue to see relief at the gas pump. Governor Brian Kemp has extended Georgia’s motor fuel tax suspension through June 3, saving motorists 33.3 cents per gallon on regular gasoline and 37.3 cents per gallon on diesel.

The Calhoun City Council is meeting today due to the upcoming Memorial Day holiday. A noon work session is scheduled for the West Line Street Conference Room, followed by the regular public meeting at 7 p.m. at the Depot Community Room. Agenda items include a first reading of the updated 2026 zoning map, alcohol package license requests, and a proposed extension of the moratorium on certain new business applications involving alcohol or THC-infused products.

On Tuesday, the Gordon County Board of Commissioners will meet to review the proposed Fiscal Year 2027 county budget. Commissioners are also expected to hold several public hearings related to residential rezoning requests and consider extending moratoriums on new commercial data centers and heavy waste digester operations.

Public safety agencies are also increasing enforcement ahead of Memorial Day travel. The Calhoun Police Department has launched its seasonal “Click It or Ticket” campaign, which runs through May 31 and focuses on seat belt enforcement.

Recent Gordon County Jail booking reports include arrests on charges such as theft by shoplifting, simple assault under the Family Violence Act, criminal trespass, battery, criminal damage to property, and simple battery.

Regional infrastructure efforts also remain a focus, as the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission has released its 2026 Infrastructure Roadmap. Gordon County is represented on the commission by Bruce Potts, Bo Nicholson, and Bud Owens.
